Wheat Harvesting at De Zeekoe
Wheat is a big part of our production here on the farm. Every year we harvest several tons of wheat.
It originated from Iraq 10,000 BC and is now being produced in several countries around the world, including South Africa, China, India, Canada and the United States.
It’s used in several food types such as breads, pastas, pizzas, bagels and cereals.
Besides being used as a food source, wheat can also be transformed to be used as fuel, as an alternative to oil.
It’s interesting to know that wheat is furthermore being used for:
- Paper
- Milk replacer
- Hair conditioners
- Biodegradable golf tees
- Adhesives on postage stamps
- Water-soluble inks
- Medical swabs
- Charcoal
- And much more…
We use our wheat flour for our own home baked breads and rooster koeke which we bake and “tan” right here in the guesthouse kitchen for the breakfast and dinner buffet table in this Guest House in Oudtshoorn, in the Garden route —- Guests from all over the world ,like to see how we cook the roosterkoeke on the coals.
In this restaurant in the Klein Karoo, with the stunning view of the mountains and the riverbed, one can really enjoy our variety of breads and food – free range and fresh produce from our own farm, that offers luxury accommodation.
